Mise-en-scene Project

The expected goals of our activity was to enliven a character, created from scratch, using mise-en-scene. My group and I received a movie lover who watches, then writes blogs about movies with her friends. Her name is Tayler Richardson, she's 30 and is employed as a baker. We first brainstormed what Taylor would look like, then used an Ai tool to help really create her look.

When creating and organizing our station, we laid out a fuzzy black blanket across our table to bring the cozy feeling of being in Taylors 'living room'. Also, we created little aluminum TV antennas to put on top of our computers to make them seem like they were tiny TVs. On our station, there were three computers each loaded onto the Canva presentation we created. Included in the presentation, was a title slide showing and describing Taylor, a mood board, mini clip of a film, 360 walkthrough, Kahoot, and a blog activity for our audience to participate in. The blog activity was for our other classmates to write, as though they were creating a blog, and talking about what they enjoyed throughout our station.

Taylors physical appearance consists of blonde hair and light green eyes. She enjoys wearing casual and comfy clothing such as, cardigans, sweatpants, and knitted sweaters. She lives with her two cats, Lilo and Mila, in her apartment suitable for her and her friends to enjoy movies in her semi-spacious living room. When it came to the organization of who was doing what, I believe we all had an equal role. I was in charge of creating the 360 walkthrough of Taylors living room, the Kahoot, and creating the blog activity. As a group, we all came together to create Taylor, as well as, making the little antennas for our computers. There were some flaws when it came to our project. When we were finished with other students stations we viewed and noticed that not many people were able to fully finish our station. It took longer than expected, and we underestimated the time we had. Overall, I loved our idea and the finished presentation.

Genre Study

Horror is a very popular category in genre, and always has been for a while. A lot of horror films consist of abandoned, lonely places. But, almost every horror film has a dark, eerie presence to it. Horror films tend to have a suspenseful pace to create fear within them. Horror genre conventions include isolated or unsettling settings, flawed protagonists, and a menacing villain, along with cinematic techniques like low-key lighting, unsettling camera angles, and sound design to create suspense and fear
These films are usually marketed towards young adults or teenagers (15-25). These films are brought to the specific audience usually through social media, and are presented in a suspenseful atmosphere.
The exorcist is a huge example of what the horror genre is. The Exorcist goes beyond typical scares by exploring deep themes like the struggle between science and faith, innocence corrupted, and the exploitation of fears. It has a dark, suspenseful, and vulnerable setting, like most horror films.

Another great example of horror is The Shining. The shining incorporates ghostly apparitions and hallucinations, and the psychological unraveling of the main character. It has many elements to bring that sense of horror.

Sound Projects

When learning about sound, I was introduced to many new terms and techniques. A couple being, synchronous and asynchronous sounds or sound perspective. Later, I was assigned two different sound projects. The first being to create a soundscape that had to be 1-2 minutes long. It was demanded to create at least 4 foley sounds for this project. The next project was to create sound for the one word film project.

For the first sound project my partner and I worked on creating a soundscape for an intense, finals soccer match. We brainstormed this project by creating an outline of sounds that would happen in this soundscape. The outline really helped us organize and sort out when and how we were going to use different sounds. For this project we used Clipchamp to Edit and, Pixabay for various sounds. We focused a lot on finding sounds that wouldn't usually be recognized or included for this scenario. But, I think that our timing and placement could have been better.

For my second sound project, I had to work with my partner from the editing project to create sound for the video. We created different soundscapes but, we were able to share some similar sounds with each other. When brainstorming, I created another outline to help me keep track of when and how I was going to utilize different sounds. I used Clipchamp and Pixabay for this project as well. I think I did a good job of incorporating various sounds, and I did a little better on the timing of the sounds. Although the timing was better throughout the second project, I still think I have a lot more to work and practice to do.
